About the Clemmons Community Theatre
Clemmons Community Theatre, Inc. was organized in the spring of 2006 by Norm and Reba Birdsall for the purpose of building community through the arts by providing family-oriented productions of a professional caliber. CCT was incorporated in the State of North Carolina in September 2006 and obtained non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service in January 2007.
Norm Birdsall serves as the artistic director for the CCT. Reba Birdsall is the executive producer.
Once organized, CCT found a home for productions at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 2570 Harper Road in Clemmons, N.C. “The church had been built with the idea of serving as an outreach to the community – offering work and play space for local athletic programs, classroom space for special homeschool programs and meeting space for community organizations,” Norm Birdsall explained. “Using the auditorium/gymnasium space for community theatre seemed another perfect fit to church leaders.”
The theatre company opened its doors in December of 2006 with a production of “I Love Ruthie,” followed by a Neil Simon comedy, “God’s Favorite,” in the spring of 2007. Since then CCT has staged productions of “Steel Magnolias,” “The Fantasticks,” “The Cemetery Club,” “Nunsense I and II,” and “Never Too Late.”
“The arts are alive and well in Forsyth County, and our intent was to join in providing residents with the opportunity to experience live theatre right here in Western Forsyth County,” Birdsall said. “The arts are integral to the well-being of a society, enriching the lives of all who partake, and nowhere is that better demonstrated than in community theatre. It is here that we bring together a multitude of people – actors, singers, dancers, musicians, set designers, costumers, carpenters, sound and lighting technicians – people who are professionally trained and those who simply have a talent or skill they are willing to share. Young and old, on stage or behind the scenes, community theatre has a place for everyone.”
Norm Birdsall – Artistic Director
Norm is a graduate of BYU with a degree in theatre and speech communications. He began his career in New York and joined the Barn Dinner Theatre east coast circuit for a number of years before settling in North Carolina. He has worked on the stage, in films and commercials, and been involved in community theatre all over the Triad as an actor, director and a theatre manager.
Reba Birdsall – Executive Director
Reba, a native North Carolinian, gained her theatre experience in high school and college. After she graduated, she worked as an executive secretary for a multi-million dollar trucking company, and prior to retirement worked as an account executive with a personnel agency. She has been involved in community theatre for a number of years, as well as in commercials and film.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Retirement Community Outreach - CCT has established an outreach program for assisted living and retirement communities in the Triad. Special performances and readings are made available to these communities with the goal of bringing the arts to people who are unable to travel. A grant has been obtained aimed at bringing live theatrical productions into these facilities during productions via the internet and Skype.
Clemmons Community Food Pantry – Being a part of a community means giving back, and one way CCT has been doing that is by collecting nonperishable food items for the local Clemmons Community Food Pantry. One night during the run of a show, attendees may bring food items that are donated to the pantry in lieu of purchasing tickets.
The Clemmons Community Theatre has also offered acting classes to students of all ages from time to time.
